Ars Helsinki

teksti Eija Kämäräinen, Kuvat Seppo Hilpo

“This book tells a story about the Finnish capital, Helsinki. It is not a chronological history, but a series of personal impressions conveyed by artists.
Some of them have seen the town as an exotic northern idyll, some others as a far-off imitation of the life in Paris or St. Petersburg. There were sculptors who wanted to decorate the parks and squares with statues of great men, and other who preferred fair Karelian maidens.

In the cours of time Helsinki altered, and along with the city, the paintings and the monuments also changed. They became modern, they took on the characteristics of impressionism, and of art nouveau, of cubism, abstract art and of pop art. …”
