“This volume is published to accompany the exhibition EXPRESSIVE! at the Fondation Beyeler, Riehen/Basel, 30 March 2003 to 10 August 2003”

“Expression is perhaps most closely associated with the most important contribution of Germanic artists to Modernism, evoking the names of the artists’ group Die Brücke in Dresden, the Blauer Reiter in Munich, or the Austrian scene with Egon Schiele and Oskar Kokoschka, but it also embraces the works of the Fauves in Paris and others.

This book, however, does not focus solely on these generative moments but endeavors to show how the long tradition of the expressive continues like a ‘red scar’ through the late 19th and the 20th century. The project traces a line from Pal Gauguin, Vincent van Gogh, and Edvard Munch, who were the most important inspirations for a movement laden with emotions and endowed with the furor of rebellion, to the expressive tendencies in the art of the interwar period and that after the Second World War through to contemporary Ne0-Expressionism. Picasso, whose oeuvre features expressive aspects from the very beginning, may be seen as a fulcrum.

The philosopher, art historian, and art critic Donald Kuspit explores in his essay the meaning of the term expressive. The publication is rounded out by seventeen shorter texts, each of which takes a central work by one of the major artists to show how the ‘red scar’ of sheer expressive art manifests itself.”
