Icelanders

photographer: Sigurgeir Sigurjónsson, author: Unnur Jökulsdóttir

“For two years photographer Sigurgeir Sigurjonsson and author Unnur Jokulsdottir travelled the length and breadth of Iceland, visiting inhabitants of the country’s far-flung villages and rural communities. Their aim was to gain an insight into the lives of those Icelanders who have adapted their traditional way of life to the modern age, bridging the gap between old and new.

Sigurgeir Sigurjonsson’s challenging portrits of people and landscape offer a fresh perspective on contemporary Iceland, while Unnur Jokulsdottir provides lyrical and gently humorous view of what it is like to be a farmer in an isolated valley, a fisherman, hunter, ‘tourist farmer’, rural shopkeeper, stone collector or child of nature. What emerges is a colourful group of individuals who have chosen to live life on their own terms, resisting the lure of Reykjavik and remaining in the environment that nurtured them.
These people are, quite simply, Icelanders.”
