He arrived in the Dominican Republic just after the assassination of President Trujillo; saw ’the Ruhr of Central America’, El Salvador; Guatemala, full of volcanoes and ruins; Honduras, redolent of O. Henry; Nicaragua; Costa Rica; Panama; Puerto Rico; and sinister Haiti.”
